Care to Kindle with your Newspaper?

Writing by Jose on Tuesday, 11 of March , 2008 at 10:28 am

There’s a new toy on the market that is making the average person take a different look at reading digital media. With the growth of Kinston.com we know that a lot of people really like to read there news online. We now average at least 20,000 visitors per day. On hot story days we sometimes hit 30,000 and more (like yesterday). Even though you can go to your computer or laptop to read the latest news, it’s still a little awkward and not very comfortable to do. Wouldn’t it be better if you had some sort of device that was specifically designed to make reading digital media more like picking up a paper book.

This device is real and it’s making a big statement in our high tech world. The hardware is called Kindle and I think it’s the best thing since sliced bread… well maybe not that great, but it’s still pretty cool. The Kindle is a hand held device that is changing the way the world reads the digital word; and with more than 100,000 Books, Blogs, Magazines and Newspapers combined… They must be doing something right.

Here is a short video on the Kindle to give you a brief idea of what it can do.

Pulled from Amazon.com

Three years ago, we set out to design and build an entirely new class of device—a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle.

We designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, reading Kindle’s screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper—and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot and is designed for ambidextrous use so both “lefties” and “righties” can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time.

We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you’ll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills—we take care of the hassles so you can just read.

With Whispernet, you can be anywhere, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, your content automatically comes to you, wherever you are. Newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning. Most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands. Haven’t read the book for tomorrow night’s book club? Get it in a minute. Finished your book in the airport? Download the sequel while you board the plane. Whether you’re in the mood for something serious or hilarious, lighthearted or studious, Kindle delivers your spontaneous reading choices on demand.

And because we know you can’t judge a book by its cover, Kindle lets you download and read the beginning of books for free. This way, you can try it out—if you like it, simply buy and download with 1-Click, right from your Kindle, and continue reading. Want to try a newspaper as well? All newspaper subscriptions start with a risk-free two-week trial.

Kindle’s paperback size and expandable memory let you travel light with your library. With the freedom to download what you want, when you want, we hope you’ll never again find yourself stuck without a great read.

We’re very proud to introduce Amazon Kindle and we hope you like it as much as we do.

- The Amazon Kindle Team

Paper-like Screen
Utilizing a new high-resolution display technology called electronic paper; Kindle provides a crisp black-and-white screen that resembles the appearance and readability of printed paper. The screen works using ink, just like books and newspapers, but displays the ink particles electronically. It reflects light like ordinary paper and uses no backlighting, eliminating the glare associated with other electronic displays. As a result, Kindle can be read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room. The screen never gets hot so you can comfortably read as long as you like.

“See what others are saying about the Kindle screen”

James Patterson, author of You’ve Been Warned
“The screen is fabulous. You would expect that, with a screen, there would be a glare, it would be hard to read but it’s not. There’s no glare. It’s not backlit, which is kind of magical. I think people are going to be very, very surprised and delighted. This is a lot easier to read than a lot of books are these days.”

Michael Lewis, author of Moneyball
“I’m telling you, after five minutes I’ve ceased to think I’m looking at a screen.
It’s not like reading a computer screen. It’s more like reading a piece of paper.
I think it’s actually clearer, easier on the eye than the printed word.”

Neil Gaiman, author of Stardust
“It’s like paper and it’s very interesting.
It’s very, very crisp.
Very functional. Very readable.”

Wireless Access with Whispernet™

Whispernet utilizes Amazon’s optimized technology plus Sprint’s national high-speed (EVDO) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, download, and read content on the go.
Unlike WiFi, you don’t have to find a hotspot. Amazon pays for Kindle’s wireless connectivity so you will never see a monthly wireless bill for shopping the Kindle Store. There is no wireless setup—you are ready to shop, purchase and read right out of the box.

Wireless

Carry Your Library in 10.3 Ounces

At 10.3 ounces, Kindle is lighter and thinner than typical paperbacks, and fits easily in one hand. Its built-in memory stores hundreds of titles. An optional SD memory card lets you hold even more. From Melville to Morrison, your favorite authors can always be with you.

In addition, a copy of every book you purchase is backed up online in Your Media Library in case you ever need to download it again. This allows you to make room for new titles on your device, knowing that Amazon is storing your personal library, which can always be re-downloaded wirelessly. If you are out of wireless coverage, such as traveling overseas, you can download books to your computer from Your Media Library and transfer via USB to your Kindle. Think of it as a bookshelf in your attic—even though you don’t see it, you know your books are there.

Library

Ergonomic Design

We wanted Kindle to be as easy to hold and use as a book, so we designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions often. Kindle’s full-length, vertical page-turning buttons are located on either side, allowing you to read and turn pages comfortably from any position. Navigation on both sides means both “lefties” and “righties” can easily use Kindle with one hand. And at only 10.3 ounces, Kindle is lighter and thinner than a typical paperback.

Shop the Kindle Store Right from Your Device

We auto-deliver your selections wirelessly, so the next time you hear about a great book, just click, buy, and read.

The keyboard also enables you to do a full text search across your entire library or within a specific title. To find the article you read last week on globalization, simply type in globalization to locate each relevant reference. You can then jump to Wikipedia to learn more about it. The keyboard also means you can annotate text and utilize Kindle’s built-in dictionary without interrupting your reading.

DVDVDVVDVDVDDVDVVDDVDVD - HDBlueray?

dvds

So… are you planning on upgrading your DVD collection anytime soon? If so, you need to know a couple of things before you go dropping cash on some cool new DVD player and not know what your getting yourself into.

First of all, it’s helpful to know exactly what a DVD is and what it means to you. Basically a DVD is just like a regular CD that holds more data. It’s just that simple. A regular CD will actually play in a standard DVD player if it is encoded correctly. So why do the big companies make us by DVD players and DVDs? Well, the CD and DVD are the same but being that a DVD can hold more information, the DVD publishing companies can put larger images that are displayed on these huge 1080hd TV’s. That way you get a bigger, more crisp and detailed image on screen. You would only be able to get about 15 to 20 minutes of HD content on a regular CD. So that’s the reason for the creation of the DVD.

But now the question at hand is HD-DVD or Blueray? Different names but pretty much the exact same product. The only real difference between the two are there capacities.

A Blueray will hold 25GB on a single layer disk and 50GB on a dual layer disk.
A HD-DVD will hold 20GB on a single layer disk and 32GB on a dual layer disk.

Just to contrast between these and a regular DVD which will only hold 4.7GBs.
Obviously the production companies are going to go with the larger of the two.

They both use the same compression and same laser wavelength to burn. So what it came down to is who is making movies for each player. Being that almost every single production company has gone completely Blueray, HD-DVD has pretty much died. You can see this today by going to your local Wal-Mart and finding a HD-DVD player for around $70. So, If you get a HD-DVD player, you would be getting it at a great price, but considering that hardly anyone is making DVD’s for it now. It would be a very foolish long term investment. So, save your cash for a couple more weeks and get your self a nice Blueray player.

blueray

Here is a good player for the cash. It’s still not cheap but at least it has a library in it’s future.

Long Distance Computer Magic

Writing by Jose on Friday, 7 of March , 2008 at 4:55 pm

Have you ever left home and forgot a file that was on your computer or maybe you didn’t forget something but you would just like to be able to get on your computer at home to do some sort of task that you were going to do but just forgot.

remote

Well I am here to help you out. This is going to be fun for both you and me, and you will get something out of it for FREE too! It’s a win win situation. (Don’t ask why I used that image. This has nothing to do with a phone but the catch phrase is nice. It makes me happy… lol)

Just imagine the ability to connect remotely with your computer from any computer in the world that has an internet connection. It’s a beautiful thing when you think about it. This ability has been around for a good while, but now it’s just starting to become main stream with regular pc users. I have been using a remote service for close to 3 years now and I don’t know how I ever got along without it. I currently use gotomypc.com

They charge $19.99 a month for a connection to one computer and lots of other cool features. Well, I’m not going to talk a lot about gotomypc because I said the word FREE earlier and I just know you don’t want to talk about prices :) There is a new service provider available for remote access and they are called Logmein.com

When you register for your account on logmein.com you just provide your basic info (absolutely no payment information!) There FREE basic service allows you to have a remote connection with your home computer and any other computer that you would like to be able to connect to remotely. Even if you don’t plan to use this feature daily, you would have to be crazy to not at least sign up and have your computer accessible. You never know when it could come in hand.

Now when you first sign up with Logmein.com they do immediately turn on your 30 day free trail to the Pro version of Logmein. The Pro version allows you to drag and drop files from your home pc to the one your currently working from and vise versa. It also allows you to print documents from your home computer at the place that you are currently accessing your home computer from. Pretty crazy huh :)

But once the 30 days runs out, you will just be reverted back to the basic free version of Logmein. Which you can still connect and use your computer.

So to get started just follow this link and have fun, you super savvy computer users you.

This Phone that Phone, I get an iPhone

Writing by Jose on Friday, 7 of March , 2008 at 3:41 pm

Well, when it comes to anticipation and waiting in the glory of knowing you are going to be getting a cool new toy soon, I start to imagine the wonderful possibilities of what I can do with it. First of all though, I just want to say “God bless grandparents”.

My grandfather is buying me an iPhone for my birthday and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I’ve watched tons of video’s on the iPhone and also read an equal amount of reviews. From what I’ve seen, when the iPhone first came out, the service plans were a little askew. But now they have a great system set up and you can pick your own service plan without ever having to deal with the sales person in the cellular store. You purchase the phone from an AT&T store, an Apple store or online. Once you have the phone, you hook it up to your PC or Mac and start iTunes. This will then let you choose a cellular service plan from AT&T. The cheapest plan they have actually suits me very well.

plans

For $59.99 you get a pretty good frigin deal. I mean, if you don’t talk on the phone that much its a really great plan. I really don’t use the phone for conversation that much. If I do, it’s pretty brief and to the point. The big selling point for me though it the data plan. It’s completely unlimited and you can get online and surf the web and send emails. There are no roaming charges or long distance charges as long as you are in the US calling in the US. That’s pretty awesome. Another cool thing is that when you get online with this thing, it can handle webpage’s in there standard format. This allows me to use something very useful to me; Remote access with my home computer. I can hop online and connect to my computer at home and send files and make transfers right from the iPhone.

I was up last night around 12:00 and I happened to see a new video that was just released yesterday for the iPhone. Here is a clip to get you interested and below is the link to the whole presentation :)

Full Presentation Here!

After I get my phone I will post some video of me fooling around with it and showing off some cool features of the phone.
