So… are you planning on upgrading your DVD collection anytime soon? If so, you need to know a couple of things before you go dropping cash on some cool new DVD player and not know what your getting yourself into.
First of all, it’s helpful to know exactly what a DVD is and what it means to you. Basically a DVD is just like a regular CD that holds more data. It’s just that simple. A regular CD will actually play in a standard DVD player if it is encoded correctly. So why do the big companies make us by DVD players and DVDs? Well, the CD and DVD are the same but being that a DVD can hold more information, the DVD publishing companies can put larger images that are displayed on these huge 1080hd TV’s. That way you get a bigger, more crisp and detailed image on screen. You would only be able to get about 15 to 20 minutes of HD content on a regular CD. So that’s the reason for the creation of the DVD.
But now the question at hand is HD-DVD or Blueray? Different names but pretty much the exact same product. The only real difference between the two are there capacities.
A Blueray will hold 25GB on a single layer disk and 50GB on a dual layer disk.
A HD-DVD will hold 20GB on a single layer disk and 32GB on a dual layer disk.
A HD-DVD will hold 20GB on a single layer disk and 32GB on a dual layer disk.
Just to contrast between these and a regular DVD which will only hold 4.7GBs.
Obviously the production companies are going to go with the larger of the two.
They both use the same compression and same laser wavelength to burn. So what it came down to is who is making movies for each player. Being that almost every single production company has gone completely Blueray, HD-DVD has pretty much died. You can see this today by going to your local Wal-Mart and finding a HD-DVD player for around $70. So, If you get a HD-DVD player, you would be getting it at a great price, but considering that hardly anyone is making DVD’s for it now. It would be a very foolish long term investment. So, save your cash for a couple more weeks and get your self a nice Blueray player.

Here is a good player for the cash. It’s still not cheap but at least it has a library in it’s future.
